WRITING SEGMENT: Tackle the Topic, Not a Memorised Story
- Unpack composition topics accurately and identify what the topic requires
- Interpret picture prompts from different angles and make purposeful choices
- Generate original and relevant story ideas even when the topic is unfamiliar
- Adapt ideas to different composition topics instead of relying on memorised model essays
- Plan coherent, well-paced plots with purposeful development
- Slow down important moments and elaborate using actions, thoughts, emotions, dialogue and sensory details
- Build tension and strengthen the climax so key moments have greater impact
- Apply vivid vocabulary and composition writing techniques purposefully
- Develop stronger openings and meaningful endings
- Review and redraft writing for relevance, content development and language
ORAL SEGMENT: Go Beyond Giving an Answer
A strong oral response needs more than an opinion.
Your child needs to be able to organise ideas, explain a viewpoint and support it with relevant reasons, examples and personal experiences.
Through structured oral practice, your child will learn to:
- understand and respond directly to the question
- organise ideas before speaking
- express opinions clearly
- explain the why behind an answer
- support responses with relevant examples and experiences
- elaborate instead of giving brief or repetitive answers
- speak with greater clarity, confidence and purpose
We also reinforce Reading Aloud, helping students pay attention to fluency, pronunciation, expression and communicating meaning to a listener.
The P5 Difference: Writing with Flexibility
At P5, we want students to stop asking:
“Which model composition can I use?”
and start thinking:
“What does this topic require?”
“Which picture gives me the strongest story angle?”
“How can I make my idea relevant?”
“Which moment should I develop?”
“How can I make my reader feel what my character is experiencing?”
This is how students begin developing the independence and adaptability they need for upper-primary composition writing.
From Model Answers to Independent Thinking
Model compositions can show a child what good writing looks like.
But they cannot prepare your child for every possible topic.
That is why our approach focuses on teaching students how to think like writers: how to interpret, generate, select, organise, develop and improve their own ideas.
The goal is not to give your child another story to memorise.
It is to give them the skills to create one when it matters.
Start Building PSLE Readiness at P5
The current PSLE English examination requires students to produce a continuous composition based on a given topic and interpret picture prompts as possible angles for their writing.
That makes relevance, idea development, flexibility and independent thinking increasingly important as students move towards P6.
Through guided practice and personalised teacher feedback, your child learns not only what makes a stronger response, but how to produce one independently.
