Our November holiday Sec 1 course has a literature component. This segment helps new Sec 1 students deepen their understanding of literature by teaching them to read texts through various lenses, such as experiencing stories, appreciating the writers’ styles, and interpreting themes within social contexts. This cognitive flexibility enables them to shift seamlessly among these perspectives, enhancing their overall comprehension.
We emphasise the importance of dialogue and writing in the meaning-making process, encouraging students to articulate their thoughts and responses. Throughout the course, we will focus on key elements, including:
- Plot: Examining how events are arranged and exploring the cause-and-effect relationships between them.
- Character: Analysing the representations of people, creatures or objects, and considering their motivations and emotional qualities.
- Setting and Atmosphere: Discussing the time and place of the story, along with the physical details that shape the mood and emotional quality.
- Style: Exploring the writer’s intentional use of language and how it achieves specific effects.
- Theme: Identifying the central ideas and key concerns that the text explores.
Join our lit teachers as we guide students to analyse and write short essays for texts through multiple lenses—experiencing story, appreciating style, and interpreting themes. Through dynamic dialogue and writing tasks, our engaging approach fosters cognitive flexibility, allowing learners to navigate plot, character, setting, style, and theme with ease. Your child will articulate their thoughts and deepen their understanding, exploring key elements like cause-and-effect relationships, emotional motivations, and more.
