Overview
Learning is understood as the acquisition
of knowledge about ourselves and our world. In Writers Studio, we have a team of zealous and professional teachers to bring your children
to greater heights in the English language.
A holistic approach to learning and revision is
adopted across our lesson.
We believe that good habits of mind and positive learning attitude should be inculcated in students. Students will learn proper decorum and conduct in
a formalized setting. Afterall, students learn best in
a conducive setting, supported by a positive learning culture.
The students will be able to understand new words and learn how to expand their vocabulary.
Primary One ( 7 yrs old)
The early years in primary school are formative
for a child’s development of language. We believe that preparation should start early
so that the child would have a better headstart
in Primary 1.
We use a meticulous set of approaches to hone language skills. The children acquire fundamental skills in writing. Basic writing elements are taught
so that students gain awareness of the structure
and scope of a short story. At this age, the child
needs to gain confidence in writing. A coherent sentence structure, the ability to spell it right and
a sufficient set of vocabulary will all add value.
Learning how to expand the plot of a strong convincingly and creatively is important. Due to
their lack of life experience, a primary one student
is knowledge limited. Hence, we focus on than how
to expand their plot logically and interestingly.
Thematic vocabulary and fundamental techniques
of suspense conflicts and cliffhangers will be broken down in a simplified manner to enable the students
to deliver interesting stories.
On admission to Primary One, children are not used to the very structured and heavy Primary
One syllabus. There is indeed a great leap from
K1 and K2 to Primary One in terms of teaching methodology and modes of assessment. As a result, many children find it difficult even to
make a headstart at Primary One.
Intensive international research by leading educationists have concluded and confirmed
that the initial years of a child’s education have
the most important bearings on his academic performance in the later years. The Primary One Preparatory Course is designed with this research result in mind so as to provide a strong headstart towards success for future learning.
The whole concept of the course is a comprehensive and thoroughly enjoyable Pre-Primary One education. This includes a strong emphasis of writing, reading literacy, answering inferential comprehension questions. Fundamental grammar skills and thematic vocabulary will be taught in detail.
Kindergarten Two (6 yrs old)
Brillant Starters Programme
Cornerstone Programme
This is a fun and child centred programme for teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. The sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). This enables children to begin building words as early as possible.
The five main skills taught include:
- Learning the letter sounds
Children are taught the 42 main letter sounds.
This includes alphabet sounds as well as digraphs such as sh, th, ai and ue.
- Learning letter formation
Using different multi-sensory methods, children
learn how to form and write the letters.
- Blending
Children are taught how to blend the sounds
together to read and write new words.
- Identifying the sounds in words (Segmenting)
Listening for the sounds in words gives children
the best start for improving spelling.
-Tricky words
Tricky words have irregular spellings and children learn these separately.
