Address Critical Sections and Secure Higher Marks

Narrative and Non-Narrative Comprehension

Our programme delves deep into both narrative and non-narrative comprehension, equipping your child with the strategies needed to tackle complex texts with confidence. Each lesson focuses on critical thinking, inference, and analytical skills that are essential for answering higher-order questions. By understanding the structure and key elements of various text types, your child will be better prepared to identify the main ideas, draw accurate conclusions, and score higher in these sections.

Summary Writing

Master the art of concise and effective summary writing with our targeted lessons. We teach students how to distil information, identify key points, and present them clearly and accurately. Our approach ensures that your child will learn to write summaries that meet the examiners’ expectations, focusing on both content and language precision. This section is designed to give your child the tools to score maximum marks in the summary section, a crucial part of the English paper.

Visual Text Analysis (New Format)

With the new format of visual text analysis, our programme is designed to familiarise your child with the latest examination requirements. Each lesson breaks down the visual elements, teaching students how to interpret and analyse visuals, text features, and their interrelationships. This skill is critical in today’s exams, where the ability to read beyond words and interpret visuals is increasingly tested. Our lessons aim to ensure your child is fully prepared for this challenging component.

Grammar Editing

Our intensive grammar editing lessons focus on honing your child’s ability to spot and correct errors in sentence structure, punctuation, and usage. Grammar editing is a vital skill that not only contributes to the grammar component of the exam but also enhances overall writing clarity. By mastering these skills, your child will be well-prepared to improve their grammar section scores significantly.

This is a modular programme, designed with specific objectives for each lesson. Course Features:

Section A: Situational Writing
Students are required to write a response based on a given scenario. This could be a formal letter, report, speech, or email, where they must address the context, purpose, and audience appropriately.

Section B: Continuous Writing
Students choose one out of several essay topics to write a narrative, descriptive, or expository essay. This section tests their ability to organise and express their ideas coherently and creatively.

Visual Text Comprehension
This section involves questions based on a visual text, such as a poster or advertisement. Students need to interpret and analyse the visual and textual elements.

Narrative/Non-Narrative Comprehension
This section presents a prose passage (narrative or non-narrative) followed by comprehension questions that test students’ understanding of the text, including inference, vocabulary, and summary skills.

Summary Writing
Students are required to summarise a specific portion of the passage from a non-narrative comprehension, focusing on extracting and condensing the key points into a clear and concise summary.

Editing
Students are given a passage with grammatical errors and are required to identify and correct these errors.

Discursive Essays

  • Argumentative Essays
These essays require students to take a stance on an issue and argue for or against it. They must present strong, evidence-based arguments to support their position, as well as address counterarguments.
  • Expository Essays
Expository essays involve explaining a concept, idea, or phenomenon in a clear and straightforward manner. Students must present facts, statistics, and logical reasoning without necessarily taking a side.
  • Discussion Essays
In these essays, students are asked to discuss both sides of an issue without necessarily taking a strong stance. The goal is to provide a balanced view, considering different perspectives before concluding with a reasoned judgement.
  • Problem-Solution Essays
These essays focus on identifying a problem and proposing possible solutions. Students need to explain the problem in detail and then suggest practical and viable solutions, evaluating their effectiveness.
  • Cause-and-Effect Essays
In this type of essay, students explore the causes of a particular issue or event and discuss its effects. The essay should clearly link causes to their effects, providing a logical flow of ideas.

Learning Outcomes:

Essay Writing
Discursive essays help students develop critical thinking, logical reasoning, and the ability to present balanced viewpoints, all of which are essential skills for success in the O Level English examination.

Summary Writing:

  • Students learn to distil lengthy passages into concise summaries, identifying and focusing on the most important points.
  • Students develop the ability to differentiate between essential and non-essential information. They learn to include only the relevant details that contribute to the overall understanding of the passage.
  • The ability to rephrase information in their own words while retaining the original meaning is a key outcome. Students improve their vocabulary and grammar through this exercise, enhancing their overall language proficiency.
  • Students learn to organise ideas logically in their summaries, ensuring that the information flows smoothly and cohesively.

Reading Comprehension
Learn to read between the lines and understand implied meanings, which is essential for answering higher-order questions. Students enhance their critical thinking skills by evaluating the content, making connections between ideas, and forming reasoned judgments.

Visual Text
Students will develop the ability to critically interpret and analyse visual elements, such as images, diagrams, and advertisements, in conjunction with accompanying text. They will learn to understand how visual and textual components work together to convey messages, persuade audiences, and create meaning, enabling them to respond accurately to related exam questions.

Grammar/Editing
Students will enhance their ability to identify and correct grammatical errors in written texts. This includes improving their understanding of sentence structure, punctuation, verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and other key grammar rules.

“My favourite story is Father Christmas. We get to act out a skit before we started analysing the characters. During that lesson, I learnt to write something meaningful. Best of all, I could get a lollipop as a reward. This is my third holiday course at Writers Studio.”

“I like to write but I needed to put on a bigger thinking cap. I learnt to make some bends in my story plot. I learnt new ways to write about the characters and what they do in their stories. I could pick up new vocabulary because at every paragraph, we are taught new phrases.”

“I enjoy the lessons taught during the Creative Writing Camp. There were so many interesting activities. I remember that we had to wear a face mask with a big nose and act out a character. It makes me think about what the character will say and do in my story. I learn to create new characters in my stories.”
